A 2006 Harris report titled, "America's Love/Hate Relationship with Energy," sums up one of the primary reasons the Energy Initiative is needed. The report states that although "there is a high degree of controversy surrounding America's use of energy...There are some facts which are largely misunderstood by the American people."

On February 20, 2007, U.S. Secretary of Energy Samuel W. Bodman addressed the full Energy Initiative coalition. Secretary Bodman spoke about the importance of the coalition and some of the challenges facing U.S. energy policy today and in the future.
